PROCESS
Working with Timber and Earth is a three-stage process.
Define the project and determine cost
Planning and logistics
Construction
Defining the Project
Timber and Earth can give you an initial price range based on a short description of your project.
For a more accurate estimate, we need to define the parameters of the project in more detail. Timber and Earth will work with you to make design decisions and determine any site specific requirements.
For smaller projects, like a basic shed, this may be done with a single phone call or email. Larger projects require one or more site visits.
Planning and Logistics
Once we agree on an estimate it’s time to move forward with planning and logistics. Here, all design details are finalized, materials are ordered, and design plans are drawn up. We also coordinate with any subcontractors your project requires, such as excavators, electricians, or plumbers.
A note on scheduling: Designing and building a customized structure is a process with a lot of moving parts. We recommend starting the design process several months in advance. This will provide time to plan and revise your design, order and receive materials, and finally hand-build your structure from the ground up.
Construction
The building process can range from a couple days for a small shed to several months for a larger, fully finished structure.
Construction begins with site preparation and laying the foundation. This may be as simple as some hand digging and setting blocks or may require excavation, backfill and concrete.
From there, construction progresses from framing to roofing to siding. Windows and doors are installed and trim is applied, followed by any interior work your structure requires (insulation, interior walls, etc). The project wraps up with a final inspection and a thorough site clean up.
